The Education of Values

As Barry Reinhold freely admits, he isn't much for bureaucracy. The InterOperability Lab's lack of formal academic status means he can run his organization with more of a personal touch. "We can look at things in a new and fresh way," he says. "I think it's allowed us to be successful, and part of that success is because we use our own values to run the organization."

As Reinhold point outs, values such as integrity and trust are especially important in the IOL, which relies solely on its performance and reputation as an independent testing service. "I enjoy working with individuals to give them the values that I think are important in any job.

"When you're simply working and being yourself with a student, you can express your choices on a number of issues . . . and spiritual values underlie a lot of choices." He enjoys that kind of openness with students, he says, "because I feel like I'm not only building their knowledge, which is only one dimension of the growth of an individual, but I'm building their character too. Those are investments that I want to make, and I think those investments will pay off more for them than a pure technological knowledge base."

Reinhold, 42, makes similar investments in other areas of his life -- as a soccer coach for youth leagues and through involvement in other community activities. He recently helped wire his church for data networking, for example. "God gives you certain gifts," he says, "and you try to use them in ways that make sense for the place you're in."
