Living On in Their Memories

UNH men's crew, a self-funded club sport, purchased a new crew shell last fall with donations given in memory of former team member Tim Stout '83. Stout died in the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Attending the dedication, on Sept. 27, 2003, were (above) current team members Phil Cohen '04, Kevin Boynton '04, coaching intern Bill Gillard '04, former team member Mark Johansen '80 and coach Pete Cathey '96. Below, Stout's father and mother, Thomas and Elinor Stout of Watertown, Mass., watch the christening of the Tim Stout '83. "He was a happy, friendly, kind, gentle soul who lived for his wife and children," wrote a high school friend on a memorial Web site. The crew team suffered another loss when UNH freshman crew team member Nicholas Frid '07 died of cardiac arrest on Oct. 2 after a morning practice with the team. Frid, the son of New Hampshire Public Television CEO and general manager Peter Frid and his wife, Kathy, was a pre-vet major and an honors graduate of Oyster River High School in Durham, N.H. A boat fund in Frid's memory has been established with Great Bay Rowing. "Nick was the kind of person where you just couldn't wait to see what he'd be like in 20 years," said Pete Cathey.
