UNH Magazine in a nutshell

Many alumni remember the New Hampshire Alumnus, the university's alumni magazine for 60 years. But the Alumnus was actually not UNH's first magazine. That honor goes to a monthly called the Enaichsee, (a combination of the initials of the college, N.H.C.) founded in 1871. The name was changed in 1894 to The New Hampshire College Monthly, which was published until 1911, when it was replaced with The New Hampshire, now the student newspaper.

The New Hampshire State Alumnus debuted in 1924. The Alumnus ran until 1991, while its companion class notes publication -- aptly named the Alumni Companion -- was published from 1988 until Fall 1998, when it was replaced by the current UNH Magazine.

UNH Magazine is published by the UNH Alumni Association and the Office of the UNH President, with funding from both offices. It is produced by the Alumni Association's communications office.

Published in fall, winter and spring, it is distributed to alumni -- who currently number over 115,000 -- parents of current students living in the U.S., faculty, staff, donors, members of the Alumni Association's dues program, New Hampshire elected officials and business leaders. (Subscription information is below.)

The magazine has won the following awards:

  • Bronze medal, Digital Media, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District I, which includes New England and eastern Canada, for "Passages," a CD of music by UNH professors and students, a companion to the UNH Magazine Winter 2007 article "All Music, All the Time."

  • Bronze medal, "Best Article of the Year," National Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for "Witness to War" by Suki Casanave '86G, Fall 2006

  • Silver medal, "Best Writing," CASE District I, for issues published in 2006

  • Bronze medal, "Best Article of the Year," National CASE for "The Not-So-Elusive Moose" by Virginia Stuart '75, '80G, Spring 2005

  • Silver medal, "Best Article of the Year," National CASE for "Crustaceans with Attitude" by Virginia Stuart '75, '80G, Spring 2004

  • Gold medal, best magazine, CASE District I, 2004

  • Bronze medal, best periodical staff writing, National CASE, for articles written in 2003 by Suki Casanave '86G and Ginny Stuart '75, '80G.

  • Gold Circle Award certificates, American Society of Association Executives, for feature writing for "Inventing the e-Coast" (Spring 2000) and "See Me, Hear Me: How Can a Campus Isn't Very Diverse Come to Embrace Diversity?" (Spring 2000)

  • Gold medal, best series of advertisements for the Alumni Association's dues program, CASE Districy I, 2000

  • Gold medal, most improved magazine, National CASE, 1999

The mission of the UNH Magazine is to "provide a window into the University of New Hampshire, and to tell thought-provoking stories of its people and its mission-related issues of teaching and learning, research, and public service."
