English Passengers

What's that you're reading?

Who better to inaugurate a new feature on books than the university librarian? This issue we asked Claudia Morner what's on her nightstand. Morner says:

"It's The English Passengers by Mathew Kneale (published by Anchor Books, 2001). Set in the 19th century, this novel chronicles a funny and incompetent smuggler who takes onboard two nutty English passengers. How they manage to sail from England to Tasmania with out-of-date charts is just part of the story. Back in Tasmania are a fierce fighting aborigine woman, her outcast son and a variety of European settlers and prisoners. This dreadful and comic story of the European settling of Tasmania was the best book I read this year."
