Campus Currents

Vigil and Vigilance

A week after the April shootings at Virginia Tech, UNH students gathered on Thompson Hall's lawn to pay tribute to the memory of the slain students. John Olson '57, president and CEO of Whelen Engineering Co., was visiting UNH in April to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences when he heard that UNH was in the process of buying an alert system for emergencies on the Durham campus. He offered to donate a state-of-the-art broadcast alarm system made by his company. "If this gift makes the UNH community sleep a little better at night, especially the parents of all those students," said Olson, "then I'm really happy to make that possible."
