Car Surfing
This Sports Car Club gathering in 1963 may have been the start of a rally, where members followed a course over winding back roads and tried to arrive at multiple checkpoints at the specified times. It was like automotive orienteering, recalls Tom Moore '70, '71G, who joined the club by way of his roommate, George Thomas '70, the owner of a Triumph TR3 roadster. Navigation involved a stopwatch and a slide rule. "No calculators, laptops or GPS!" Says Moore. "But the fun part was when you got lost briefly and then had to race to make up time."
