MARCHING ORDERS: Rachel Adams '45 was a 16-year-old freshman from Gorham, N.H., when she appeared in the photo at below, leading the right-hand column in a marching drill on Memorial Field. Like all women physical education majors, Adams was required to have a second major—in her case, zoology. "If there had been the same job opportunities for women then that there are today," says Adams, "I probably would have been a forestry major." Adams also appears in a dark sweater in the photo at top. She chuckles over Life magazine captions that made it sound like obstacle courses in the snow were regular activities for UNH women. "It was more like propaganda for the war effort than anything else," she says. Nonetheless, after graduating at 19, Adams went on to a 23-year career as an Army physical therapist before retiring to Washington State's San Juan Islands.
